Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) using implants is a promising research frontier in psychiatry and neuromedicine. DBS technique blocks tremors by using implants in brain have already tested on Parkinson’s

patients. More than 40,000 Parkinson’s patients worldwide have these implants showing positive results. Now scientists are discovering alternatives to control brain circuits with these implants for other diseases like chronic depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. The idea behind this is to explore whether these implants can act as antidepressant by altering how the basic brain circuitry fires in patients with severe not curable symptoms.
The brain is a complex and exciting area of research. Mental disorders like severe depression and obsessive compulsion disorder have challenged psychiatrists for decades. Chances of heal by medicinal and surgical intervention are thin for many patients. Deep Brain Stimulation or DBS using implants for treating mental disorder is still in an early experimental state. Results are being examined closely.
Human Brain is a very sensitive area for invasive research. In Parkinson’s affected brain areas have been mapped and wire implants are pop up in particular thalamus area. But such areas are yet to be considered as a mental disorder. Scientists do have a fair idea and are exploring focus areas for depression patients. Manipulating nerve circuits in brain can have vast unpredictable behavioral side effects. Each brain is uniquely wired which makes all of distinct individuals.
DBS cannot be called successful unless psychiatric patients show manifest enhancement. Experiments till now showed that patients are recovering. These experimental studies are being conducted by teams at the Cleveland Clinic, Brown University, and Belgium’s University of Leuven.
