SanDisk Launches New SSDs

sandisk-lowcost-ssd.jpgSanDisk, a name synonymous with quality when it comes to flash memory, has outdone itself yet again with a new line of flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSDs) which were specially designed to cater for an emerging new category of portable consumer electronics known as Ultra Low-Cost PCs (ULCPC) or “netbooks”.

Solid-state drives, semiconductor-based memory devices that use NAND flash memory chips, are seen as a promising alternative to hard disk drives used in laptop PCs as they are more shock-resistant and consume less power.A move toward solid-state drives poses a threat to hard drive makers such as Seagate Technology Continue reading…

2 x 2 Lego Webcam Adds A Touch Of Brick Geekery

legocam.jpgMost webcams aren’t exactly ascetically pleasing. They all seem to resemble the HAL computer from Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey a little to closely. The 2 x 2 Duplo Lego Webcam from Etsy adds a touch of geeky familiarity which is both pleasing to the eye, and perhaps less intimidating to the shy exhibitionist.

The Lego Webcam comes attached to a 50 cm gooseneck Continue reading…

R2D2 Wireless Web Camera

R2D2 wears many hats in the movies, and I am constantly amazed at the incompetence of the Galactic Empire to outwit a mere droid. It is a wonder how such incompetence still resulted in the Galaxy being ruled by the evil Emperor Palpatine, but that’s another story for another day. Here we have the R2D2 Wireless Web Camera that increases your cool factor by ten.

This daft droid is not only a remote control wireless webcam, but will also play your web based audio, has a digital camera, can be used as an internet phone, has voice record, wirelessly transmits images, and has possibly the coolest remote control unit in existence.

Features

* R2D2 is both a wireless webcam with adjustable angles and amotorised ‘bot travelling Continue reading…

OLPC project to get Windows XP

The OLPC organization may have plans to drop Linux and welcome Microsoft’s Windows XP.Microsoft has been working to get a slimmed-down version of Windows to run on XO laptops. One current hang-up is whether the necessary hardware would add $7 to $12 to an XO’s cost, taking the project even further away from its eventual goal of producing the machines for less than $100.

The Windows-based XO systems will be released in the upcoming pilot programs from June onwards, and it is nice to see that the OLPC group and Microsoft finally come to an agreement where everyone can win. After all, the decision as to whether to include Continue reading…
