Yahoo and Microsoft used the press to negotiate for several months regarding a potential merger. Now it appears Acer and Microsoft are having a public spat.Acer Vice President of Marketing Gianpiero Morbello said his Taiwanese PC maker has big plans to develop the market for Linux, not only on its low-cost ultraportable, but on the company’s laptops as well. The reason is because of the cost and operation of Microsoft’s operating system over open-source Linux.
Morbello said ,”We have shifted towards Linux because of Microsoft”. Continue reading…

The Digital Masterworks Art-TV from Samsung represents the fourth wave of LCD technology with its fine 46-inch widescreen display being wrapped up in a fine art frame instead of the same old boring traditional bezel. With 1080p resolution, 3,000:1 contrast ratio and 500 nits brightness, the display simply stuns with the immediacy of its appeal and the charisma of its elegance. The TV is being developed with The Thomas Kinkade Company, so naturally the first versions of this set will be used to display art by Kinkade. The set will come pre-loaded with his paintings or will be updated, either wired or wirelessly, according to Samsung.
There are also apparently plans for the screen to be touch sensitive, which will allow lighting or colors within an artwork to be altered by hand. And when you’re not using the display as a decorative piece, you can always use it for its intended purpose as a TV.

Designed by Anthony Sims, the moon rover boasts a “suspended pod that allows the pilot to spot troublesome terrain as well as remain stable through rough riding. Each wheel, for instance, can walked upon just like NASA’s Athlete robot. Inside, astronauts will find a cabin built for comfort and security, with space that allows some privacy as well as ample room to work and sleep. Form isn’t fighting function here, either — the driver lies against an independently suspended pod that allows the pilot to spot troublesome terrain as well as remain stable through rough riding.

Casio’s excellent EX-F1 slow motion digital camera has a bit of competition in Sanyo’s Xacti HD1010 camcorder. The new HD1010 adds improved image processing and stabilization, new “face chaser” technology for stills and video, and amusing new 300fps slow-motion mode. Nothing compared to Casio’s freakish EX-F1 but a nice novelty for shooting the kids’ sporting adventures. Sanyo also tossed in a new 7fps continuous still shot mode which snags images at the sensor’s maximum 4 megapixel resolution.
The camera also has increased low light sensitivity, decreasing noise compared to previous Xactis. They’re pushing the bitrate from 12 to 14Mbps, too, to help picture quality Continue reading…

SanDisk, a name synonymous with quality when it comes to flash memory, has outdone itself yet again with a new line of flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSDs) which were specially designed to cater for an emerging new category of portable consumer electronics known as Ultra Low-Cost PCs (ULCPC) or “netbooks”.
Solid-state drives, semiconductor-based memory devices that use NAND flash memory chips, are seen as a promising alternative to hard disk drives used in laptop PCs as they are more shock-resistant and consume less power.A move toward solid-state drives poses a threat to hard drive makers such as Seagate Technology Continue reading…

An artificial heart is a prosthetic device that is implanted into the body to replace the biological heart. It is distinct from a cardiopulmonary bypass machine (CPB), which is an external device used to provide the functions of both the heart and the lungs. The CPB oxygenates the blood, and therefore does not need to be connected to both blood circuits.
Types:
1)Total Artificial Heart (TAH) implantation involves the removal of the native heart. It is a surgical procedure similar to heart transplantation with a human donor heart.
2)Cardiac (heart) assist devices differ from the TAH, in that the patient’s heart is not removed during implantation. Assist devices may include either a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) or a Right Ventricular Assist Device (RVAD) or both. As opposed to TAH implantation, the assist device serves to provide only a part of the total cardiac output of the patient’s heart.
This artificial heart you see here grosses me out, but count me in if it will be able to save lives. Originally invented by a human who is now too feeble to even row a boat, the artificial heart can pride Continue reading…

Most webcams aren’t exactly ascetically pleasing. They all seem to resemble the HAL computer from Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey a little to closely. Many people feel intimidated from the style of the big-eye webcam. The 2 x 2 Duplo Lego Webcam from Etsy adds a touch of geeky familiarity which is both pleasing to the eye, and perhaps less intimidating to the shy exhibitionist.
The Lego Webcam comes attached to a 50 cm gooseneck Continue reading…
